iExplain: The History and use of Jailbreaking

Robert Hernandez

iExplain: The History and use of Jailbreaking

In the beginning, there was the wheel, there was fire, and then there were iPods. Such inventions that took countless trials and errors are just trivial things in today’s society, but when restrictions on the wonders of these inventions are set, loopholes arise! Introducing the Jailbreak! But how and exactly what is a Jailbreak? Let us take a journey into the history of Jailbreak, shall we? In (2007), a man named George Hotz purchased a new iPhone 2g from Apple and took it home to enthusiastically use it with his T-Mobile company, only to realize it did not work. Determined, George reprogrammed his iPhone and with his skill made it available to any carrier. This process became to be known as called unlocking; however, the ability to reprogram allowed another man named Jay Freeman to import Java into the phone and thus “fixing” the iPod to give the user the ability to do what they want to their personal use.

According to JailbreakMe, a jailbreak is simply the ability to run apps and use themes and tweaks not approved by Apple. Jailbreaking doesn’t slow down your device or use any extra battery. A jailbreak lets your device be how you want it. Now to coders and hackers alike, this is golden, but to the average joy that just hears the term “Jailbreak” sounds pretty fish doesn’t it? According to the Library of Congress, a new anti-circumvention exception to the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act), stating people are allowed to tweak their handsets for the purposes of installing legally, obtained software—known as jailbreaking in iOS land and rooting in the Android. The following in from the statement on DMCA:

Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.”

Although Jailbreaking is legal, this does not mean Apple will do it for you.  They can not prevent you from doing the process of jailbreaking; however, using it as illegal means to get Apple applications in a non-Apple-approved way, or installing illegal or pirated software. Not that any of you jailbreakers would ever do that. What’s more, the DMCA still broadly forbids distributing to the public any “technology, product, service, device, component, or part thereof” that’s primarily designed to break access controls, so Apple can always go after the Dev Team directly.

Nevertheless, the ability to jailbreak has given us a new outlook on how limitations push people to work harder to suprass them. What I mean by that is that “Cydia,” the softyes ware that allows Jailbreaking allowed people to collaborate and create a pseudo-app store, months before the app store was even invented by Apple! Furthermore, most new updates on the iPhone are pre-created jailbreak abilities, such as cybercam for video, and multitasking that was the next big thing in iPhone 4.0

JailBreakMe 2.0 is a tool for jailbreaking not only the iPhone 4, but any iPhone running iOS 4.0.1 or below and any iPad running iOS 3.2.1 or below. What’s especially unique about this jailbreak is that it can be implemented simply by visiting the JailBreakMe website, making the process far less complicated than most hacks.

Head to Jailbreakme to do it online, or download the firmware and follow any youtube video and you got this! With power comes responsibility, and without restrictions, imagination is boundless!

Quick question and answers

1)what does it mean your iphone is jailed?

“Jail” refers to file system limitations put in place by Apple on standard iPhones. These limitations restrict iPhone read and write access to just a small part of the media partition. You cannot access system files at all and you cannot use the disk directly as you would with an iPod with disk mode enabled.

2) can anyone jailbreak?

Yes! its free and its safe and more features!

3) by jailbreaking, does this mean that getting apps from the app store for free through jailbreak is legal?

This is not true. the action of jail breaking aka getting the app cydia (see below) is legal, along with all the modification to your isystem, but illegally getting the apps through features like installious are still reasons apple can sue you. Use those apps at your own risk.

4) can i unlock and jailbreak?

Yes, in fact most iphones are needed to be jailbroken to be unlocked, and all the rules apply to unlocking as it is to jailbreaking.

5) why doesn’t apple just jailbreak it for me?

apple does not want to recognize jailbreak, although many breakthroughs in apple came through the jailbreak society. Furthermore, byJailbreaking, you lose your iphone warrenty, but its not as you need it anyway when many bugs on the phone can be fix via jailbreaking it.

6) my warranty….?

yes there is always a downside. but as i said many bugs can be fix through Jailbreaking and fix it videos.
